About Campus Sustainability

water on leafUCSC has a long history of environmental and conservation programs. To support, publicize and better coordinate campus sustainability efforts, the campus has created a Sustainability Office and hired a Sustainability Coordinator. This office is the keystone of a two-year pilot program aimed at the establishment of a permanent home for campus sustainability activities.

Currently, the Office of Sustainability works to:

  • Publish UC Santa Cruz's first Campus Sustainability Assessment
  • Initiate the Climate Action Planning process for the campus
  • Participating in the Campus Sustainability Subcommittee
  • Create a Campus-wide definition and vision for Sustainability
  • Establish and develop the Sustainability Office
  • Develop public relations and outreach strategies
  • Developing the UCSC Sustainability Website
  • Organize the 7th Annual Campus Earth Summit &
Focus the Nation event on January 31st, 2007
  • Initiate the Chancellor's Sustainability Internship Program
  • Develop the Chancellor's Sustainability Awards Ceremony

Goals for the Two-Year Pilot Program for the UC Santa Cruz Sustainability Office

1. Ensure that sustainability is institutionalized.
Ensure sustainability does not become a “sidebar” by working proactively to integrate into the core responsibilities of faculty, students and staff.

2. Develop a plan for permanent Sustainability Office.
Facilitate the development of a clear plan for reporting structure, funding, position(s), and goals for a permanent Sustainability Office.

3. Create centralized communication, Coordination, Outreach, and Education.
Create a central space for coordination of campus sustainability activities and support educational initiatives where feasible.

4. Plan for Climate Action.
Work with faculty leadership, facilities staff, and administrators to determine place of climate action planning in campus sustainability and to ensure policy commitments are met.

5. Integrate sustainability into the classroom.
Help integrate operations and academics to establish UCSC as a living learning laboratory in which students can learn and apply sustainability principles and techniques.
