Waste Reduction

The goals of Green Labs Waste Reduction is to increase resusable behavior, educate on proper recycling techniques, create more outlets for recycling, and provide adequate recycling resources.

In a 2011 waste assessment, labs produced around 12% of landfill-bound campus waste. Green Labs has since identified many of these items as recyclable and created programs which labs can utilize to reduce their waste:

While recycling is a useful method to divert waste from the landfill, the most efficent and sustainable option is to reuse. Always looks for ways to reuse personal, office, or laboratory products during your daily routine. The Green Labs Program is currently working on pilot projects to increase reuse behavior and awareness within labs.

Styrofoam Collection Program

Styrofoam BinGreen Labs has set up a quarterly Styrofoam Collection Program for labs and all other departments who may have high influxes of Styrofoam. We have diverted over 100 yards of Styrofoam since this collection program has taken place. That's one football field of Styrofoam!

Fall Quarter 2016*:
Winter Quarter 2017*:
Spring Quarter 2017*:
* - TBA

On the following dates and times, a roll-off bin will be located at the Physical Science Building loading dock with volunteers ready to assist in drop-offs. Green Labs hopes that all labs will participate in the collection and recycling of our large Styrofoam waste stream.

Physical Plant also offers a continuous Styrofoam Pickup Program for participating facilities. Contact your building coordinator to see if and where a Styrofoam recycling loaction is available near you.

Pipette Tip Box & Plastic Pail Recycling

Pipette Tip Box Bin
Green Labs, Physical Plant, and EH&S coordinated to recycle rigid plastics such as pipette tip boxes and plastic pails. Recycling bins have been set up throughout science buildings. See our Recycling Guide for locations. Since the start of this program, we have diverted 10,000-15,000 lbs of plastic.

Look for recycling bin signage.

Clean Lab Plastics & Conical Tube Recycling

Clean Lab Plastic Containers and Conical Tubes

Green Labs, Physical Plant, and EH&S coordinated to recycle clean lab plastic containers and conical tubes. A cojoined recycling bin is located at the Physical Science Building loading dock. Please make sure that both containers and tubes are clean and non-contaminated before recycling.

Look for recycling bin signage.

Metal Container Recycling

Green Labs, Physical Plant, and EH&S coordinated to recycle alchohol cans and metal shipping containers. Recycling bins have been set up throughout science buildings to collect this common laboratory waste. See our Recycling Guide for locations.

Look for recycling bin signage.
