What is an Assessment?
A Sustainability Assessment is a document that elucidates and evaluates the ecological performance, resource use efficiency, and overall sustainability of the structures and operations of a given institution. Campus Sustainability Assessments have been undertaken worldwide for nearly two decades by many of our peer institutions, including UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, Yale University, and many others. Over the past few years, these assessments have become increasingly common, and there is rapidly growing consensus on what subject matter should be included or at least considered. UCSC published its first Sustainability Assessment in 2007 and provided a short update in 2008. In spring 2010, UCSC drafted its first Campus Sustainability Plan, building on the groundwork laid in the Assessment.
