Procurement
UC Santa Cruz is committed to environmentally and socially responsible purchasing practices that support the well-being of our community and planet.
At UCSC there are many resources for students, staff and faculty who want to provide and promote sustainable alternatives in the procurement of goods and services, in an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Sustainable procurement means choosing goods and services that minimize negative impacts on human health and the environment when compared to conventional alternatives.
Before buying something new… STOP! See if office supplies or large equipment can be found at our Surplus Store or a community re-use center like Grey Bears. After, consult our UCSC Green Purchasing Guide.
We highly recommend avoiding large, retail businesses even though they are more convenient. When evaluating products, we consider their entire lifecycle — from the sourcing of raw materials and methods of manufacturing, to packaging, transportation, usage, and eventual disposal or reuse.
Ask yourself if the product…
- Can it be reused?
- Can it be composted or recycled through UCSC waste programs?
- Does it contain recycled or environmentally preferable materials?
- Does it produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions across its lifecycle?
- Does it reduce or eliminate the use of harmful chemicals?
- Is it made through energy and water-efficient processes?
- Does it utilize renewable energy or alternative fuels?
- Does it come with minimal or eco-friendly packaging?
