The Cowell Ranch Hay Barn is a campus and community event space utilized for weddings, conferences, and public events. - Ecology Action Sustainable Transportation Intern - part-time (Gain experience in sustainable transportation)
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Interns must receive academic course credit.

Schedule: 6-12 hours per week  
 
Internship Description: 
 Ecology Action’s Sustainable Transportation Division is looking for a dedicated intern to help promote cycling and other active forms of transportation. This intern position would work closely with Program Specialist Tawn Kennedy to promote and support Slug Bike Life events and presentations at UCSC, including virtual workshops, in-person bike repair and safety distribution events, and more. Interns will help to promote events to the campus community, and assist with both in-person and virtual event delivery. 
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Assist with Slug Bike Life in-person events, including On-bike Skills Training, Bike Mechanic Checks, Bike Light and Helmet Distributions, and E-bike Demo events. 
  • Assist with virtual events, including Intro to E-bikes, Bike Commuting 101, and Urban Cycling and Bike Safety workshops.  
  • Assist with Slug Bike Life on-campus outreach and event marketing via class presentations, student organization networking, flyering, and virtual outreach. 
  • Help with event data entry, data analysis, and updating relevant ridership statistics. 
  • Other activities may include attending planning meetings, capturing and generating content for social media, event moderation, and/or other special projects as identified by intern/supervisor.

Institute for Social Transformation : Marketing & Communications Intern

Rooted in the Social Sciences Division, the Institute for Social Transformation shares a commitment to social justice and creating positive change in the world. Our intern will work on social media, marketing, outreach, website updates, and graphic design for social justice initiatives, events, and programs. The intern will help to create and maintain a cohesive, consistent social media presence for the institute and the Social Sciences Division, and will contribute to the management of our marketing platforms (website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Mailchimp, etc.). In addition the intern may help to create digital content, event flyers, and other marketing tasks.

Sustainability Studies Media Specialist
The Rachel Carson College Sustainability Studies Minor is seeking qualified applicants to  support Rachel Carson College Academic staff with advancing the visibility of our programming, classes, and the minor in Sustainability Studies, and the theme of Environment & Society associated with the college.  One of the primary responsibilities for this position will be to maintain our instagram feed and support a monthly  promotion /giveaway. A second priority will be to create graphical digital content for online newsletters, websites,  and other feeds in order to highlight events, opportunities to get involved, partner, and what students and instructors working in Sustainability Studies are accomplishing in the field. The virtual Disc* (Design & Innovation for Sustainable Cities) and [IN]LAND programs, offered this summer, are about the present and future of sustainable urban environments, their challenges, and the potential of design and innovation as catalysts for change on a global scale. 
Disc*'s interdisciplinary content incorporates elements of architecture, environmental planning, urban design, landscape architecture, city planning and digital fabrication into its curriculum. The program thrives in diversity and welcomes students from all majors and levels of design experience.
Participants in the [IN]LAND program develop a landscape vocabulary that engages with the concepts of ecology, public space, sustainability and multiple scales of design. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of landscape architecture and environmental planning through the process of making and experimentation. No prior experience in design is required.

Seasonal Biologist – Spartina Treatment Monitor-applications due by Friday, May 28th 
Olofson Environmental, Inc. is seeking seasonal Spartina Treatment Monitors to assist in field monitoring of non-native Spartina (cordgrass) treatment activities and monitoring of native marsh plant restoration plots. Monitors will gain experience in marsh plant ID, using software on GPS units to navigate to and record the treatment of Spartina patches, and in using desktop-based ArcGIS to edit field-collected data. Successful candidates should have an undergraduate degree or commensurate experience in ecology, conservation, habitat restoration, or a related field. Must be willing and able to spend long (8+ hour) field days walking outside in mud and soft substrate, in fully exposed sun, and carrying heavy equipment. Education and Outreach Associate - Job # 4381
The Education and Outreach Associate (E&O Associate) will provide leadership in a wide variety of areas related to the coordination of campus sustainability efforts. With the Education and Outreach team, the incumbent will develop educational materials including a monthly newsletter, social media, and assist with the website occasionally. CALPIRG remote internships and volunteer opportunities
CALPIRG Students is a student organization here at UCSC that works to protect the environment, make college affordable, and promote civic engagement. Just in the last few months UCSC students met with the Governor's office and delivered 18,000 petition signatures calling to accelerate our move to 100% clean energy to fight climate change, and lobbied Congress to double Pell grant funding.
This Spring we are continuing our work to tackle one of the biggest problems facing our generation - climate change. We need to take strong, swift action to reduce the impacts of climate change, and that's why we are organizing for 100% clean energy by 2030 and hosting the largest climate convergence on the West Coast this Earth Day!

Student researchers in our program will work closely with a UCSC faculty
member (and graduate students) for 14 months to conduct research related to agroecology,
sustainable agriculture, and food systems. Students will learn general research skills, methods,
and ethics, how to design research questions and summarize results, and how to make great
presentations. Fellows will participate in data collection and analysis, report writing, extensive
mentoring activities, workshops, field trips (if allowed), and peer-to-peer exchanges and will learn valuable skills for gaining employment in sustainable agriculture and related fields. Specific research topic areas will differ for each student but could include studying the ecology of urban gardens, examining spatial aspects of farms and farming communities, investigating ecological aquaculture, or promoting ecological restoration in degraded agricultural lands.

UC Washington Program- information sessions on February 11, 4-5pm and February 26, 11am-12pm
The UC Washington Program (more commonly referred to as UCDC), is a systemwide academic internship program available for UC students from any major. Students majoring in non-combined ENVS majors are eligible to petition to use UCDC course(s) to fulfill ENVS upper division electives. 
UCDC offers eligible undergraduate students an exciting opportunity to combine course work, exciting field research, and unparalleled internship experience during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Typically, students live in residence during the program in Washington DC, but this year the program will be remote through Spring 2021. Students from any major can gain valuable on-the-job experience with professionals and experts in fields that interest them. From NASA, to the Nation Institutes of Health, to the Smithsonian, to the Capitol, students have the chance to test-drive a career, build their portfolio or resume, and make valuable industry contacts that can be essential to landing the ideal job upon graduation.

Tracking Changes of Important Pollinators at Biodiverse Sites in Santa Cruz County- application due by February 21
Project Background: CAMINO students at the Norris Center would help resurvey biodiverse sites around Santa Cruz County for important pollinator insects, including bees, flies, butterflies, and moths. Students would learn how to re-trace transects surveyed by local Santa Cruz naturalist Randall Morgan in the 1990’s. The students would learn how to identify insects, identify plants, capture insects, sort insects, pin insects, associate all metadata with insect specimens, and how to analyze data on insect surveys. Possible final projects include comparisons of pollinator richness from the 1990’s to today, correlations between habitat changes/plant diversity and changes in pollinator richness, natural history studies on various insect taxa, descriptions of changing insect communities or behavior over a summer, and more.
Intern duties: Conducting field surveys for pollinators at local field sites in Santa Cruz County; curation (pinning, sorting, labeling, identification, data digitization) of pollinator specimens in the Norris Center; development of individual research project within the scope of broader survey goals; analysis, writeup, and presentation of project results.
Intern qualifications: Comfortable with strenuous physical activity in the field; enthusiasm for post-survey curatorial work in museum to process collected insects; extreme attention to detail associated with insect curation; background in ecology and/or entomology recommended (but not required).

Carbon Fund Coordinator, Sustainability Office - applications due by February 21
Two Carbon Fund Coordinators will support a wide variety of areas related to the management, promotion and tracking of the Carbon Fund Committee’s projects and activities. The Carbon Fund was established in 2010 and provides grants to projects focused on reducing greenhouse gases. As a student coordinator, you will have the opportunity to participate in the implementation of these projects as well as gain valuable experience in organization and committee administration, reviewing grant proposals, campus operations, climate change mitigation efforts, and more. Zero Waste Atlas Fellowship: Spring Class of 2021-application due by December 13, 11:59pm EST
The Zero Waste Atlas Fellowship is a brand new program PLAN launched in 2020 to collaborate with students and staff that are passionate about helping their campus develop a strategic plan to achieve zero waste. The Fellowship provides students with the hands-on training and experience to be able to perform Stage 1 of the zero waste assessment of their campus. Atlas Fellows will learn how to use the Atlas Campus Programs Checklist to perform the interviews needed to gather data for the campus assessment.

WTS Advancing Women Advancing Transportation Scholarships- application due January 4, 2021
WTS San Francisco Bay Chapter is offering scholarships for women pursuing studies and careers in transportation. Applicants must live, work, or go to school in at least one of the following thirteen California counties – Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, and Sonoma.
Funds will be available in late spring of 2021. Scholarship winners will receive a free one-year WTS membership.Candidates will need to submit a separate application for each graduate and undergraduate scholarship. Several of the scholarships have both a local and an international component. WTS San Francisco Bay Chapter will collect and review all applications, and the winner of the local portion will become the Chapter’s applicant for national.

Beach Flats Community Garden- Winter Quarter
In this internship students will work with the Beach Flats Community Garden in several capacities. The garden, which has flourished for over 21 years, is located in Santa Cruz in the historically Latino community of Beach Flats lying at the base of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. It is a space of food production for local consumption contributing to food security and continuation of agroecological traditions and passing along of knowledge from gardeners who have immigrated from Mexico and El Salvador. Through interviews and participant observation, students will work with researchers to understand how the garden is perceived by the community, what gardeners and allies are doing to advocate for the garden, and how the city of Santa Cruz is trying to resolve this issue.

Calabasas Elementary Internship- Winter Quarter
In this internship, we seek UCSC students who want the opportunity to work with youth, facilitate agroecological knowledge acquisition, promote locally grown, healthy food, and raise awareness of social and environmental justice issues. Interns will travel to Calabasas Elementary once or twice a week (transportation provided or gas money reimbursed) to undertake the after-school program, helping to design and implement environmental, garden-based curricula with children ranging from first graders to sixth graders. Interns will also assist with the upkeep of the Discovery Garden: weeding, planting, watering, pruning, etc.

Santa Cruz Climate Action Internship-Winter Quarter
We are dedicated to Climate Change action, education, outreach. Intern assignments will be tailored to students interests and skills. Tasks include: organizing local events, preparing flyers, posters, website materials and community outreach; assisting with education projects in schools, after school programs and events such as “Welcome Back Monarchs” Festival; contacting local media about possible articles on current student projects. Environment America Climate Campaign Associate
Transportation is now America’s number one source of global warming pollution, but we have the technology and policy know-how to change this. That’s why Environment America is hiring a Campaign Associate to help with Destination: Zero Carbon, a nation-wide campaign to electrify cars and buses, and to reduce the need to drive by making it easier, cheaper, and more enjoyable to travel on foot, bike, or public transit. Student Success Educational Equity Participatory Action Research-due December 1
The First Generation Initiative is partnering with the Student Success Equity Research Center to launch a pilot project focused on research identity, educational equity, and student success on campus. We are looking to hire six (6) research scholars to assist us in this paid internship for the upcoming Winter and Spring quarters ‘21. Students will be working as a team with psychology PhD student Stephanie Tam Rosas; Dr. Rebecca Covarrubias, psychology faculty member and faculty director of SSERC; and Gwynn Benner, managing director of SSERC. 
The goal of this project is to build a community of student research scholars who will be using their own expertise in studying student research identity and addressing educational equity at UC Santa Cruz. Campus Sustainability Council (CSC) Council Openings
CSC is a student-run funding body that allocates grant money to organizations working on sustainability projects. The CSC is currently looking for council members that can participate for the entire academic year. Council members are stewards for the Campus Sustainability Programs Fee that all UCSC undergraduate students pay in their tuition. As a member of the council you will learn the Principles of Democratic Budgeting, Sustainability & Climate Justices, and the Student Agency Model. Volunteering on the council also gives students an opportunity to develop their professional skills, including time management, budget management, interpersonal communication, and networking.

Younger Lagoon Reserve- due by 5pm Wednesday, October 14th
Younger Lagoon Reserve (YLR) will be offering its online restoration internship again this Fall! Although not field based, each week we will tackle a different aspect of restoration and will provide info about the reserve and its species. The internship is hosted on YLR's Google Classroom and we will provide a new set of resources each week including readings, videos, and various field guides. We will then host discussion sections each Friday from 12-1PM that will feature a special guest (researcher, grad student, botanist, etc). Apply here.

CASFS Fall Remote Internship - due by 5pm Wednesday, October 14th
This fall, CASFS is offering a 2-unit remote survey internship to introduce students to CASFS's diverse sites, programs, production practices and ongoing opportunities. Through weekly live sessions, small group discussions, and pre-recorded video content, students will learn about soil fertility management, basic horticultural skills, principles of propagation, intensive gardening and cooking with the seasons. The internship includes a “grow-at-home” component where students will be supplied with materials and guidance for micro-greens gardening. Students living in Santa Cruz will also have access to seedlings from the CASFS farm to grow at home. Students will also connect their work to the broader food system as a whole, and learn how to continue to engage with CASFS throughout their academic careers.

DISC* [Design & Innovation For Sustainable Cities] Program due May 15th
Disc* is an immersive five-week summer program for college students offered by UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design that explores an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approach to design and analysis in the urban environment. Disc* participants engage in the discourses of urban innovation, and develop creative solutions to tackle the urgent challenges global cities face today.
Upon completion of the Disc* program, participants graduate with a strong understanding of urban dynamics and a broad toolkit with which to confront "wicked problems", as well as compelling artifacts for their academic portfolio. Disc* alumni are prepared to become the next thought leaders and game changers in the shaping of our built environment.
Disc* is open to eligible students from any college or university. No prior experience in design is necessary.

Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation Semester-Away Program due June 15th
UCSC undergrads or recent graduates from any area of study may apply for either of the two residential programs offered in the fall, which each contain 16 credit hours and include plenty of field work and lab work.  

Also, we have both merit and need-based scholarship opportunities for the upcoming cohort. UC-Santa Cruz students will simply need to be admitted to Mason as a visiting/non-degree student first, just for the program, and then they can apply for the scholarship, too.

Carbon Fund Coordinator, Sustainability Office until Filled 
Two Carbon Fund Coordinators will support a wide variety of areas related to the management, promotion and tracking of the Carbon Fund Committee’s projects and activities. The Carbon Fund was established in 2010 and provides grants to projects focused on reducing greenhouse gases. The UC Natural Reserve System is now accepting applications for the Fall 2020 field studies program,California Ecology and Conservation. California Ecology and Conservation brings together 27 undergraduates from across the UC system for seven weeks of intensive learning at NRS reserves. Experienced field instructors help undergraduates transform into scientists. Students complete a series of increasingly independent research studies while learning to notice natural patterns, frame questions into feasible research projects, and practice standard field techniques. At the conclusion of each project, students analyze their data and present their findings in oral presentations and written reports. Students hone their research, public speaking, and scientific writing skills with constant practice and feedback. All the while, students gain a working familiarity with California’s diverse ecosystems.
All UC undergraduates who have a 2.5+ GPA, are in good standing with their home campus, and have successfully completed an introductory biology course are eligible to apply.

Apply before the start of spring quarter!  The ENVS department offers many internships in topics ranging from conservation, public policy, environmental education, environmental justice, agroecology, business, and alternative energy.  Both on-campus and off-campus are offered for either 2-unit or 5-unit credit.

Course Design Assistant Position due March 5th
Karen Holl is looking for a student or recent graduate to help during spring quarter 2020 with preparations for a future online tropical ecology and conservation course. The student’s primary tasks would be to review relevant existing online videos and other teaching resources and to research options for software platforms to enable a variety of users to record and share their own videos.

Required skills: good organizational and writing skills. 

Desired skills: upper-division coursework in ecology; experience making high-quality videos.

Time: 60 hr of work during spring quarter 2020. 

Compensation: $15.92 per hour for current students who have not completed their bachelor’s degree, $16.75 for those who have completed their bachelor’s degree.

The SSA position comes with guaranteed housing for the 2020-21 Academic Year and a $1,842 quarterly housing stipend. This position is also open to students who cannot apply through the ER system. Participate in research studying the impacts of agricultural diversity and climate change on beneficial insects, restoration of agricultural lands, employment opportunities for new farmers, or ecological aquaculture. Gain valuable skills in research, ethics, and leadership. Students will be paid to do research part time in the school year and full time in the summer at UCSC or near campus.

PoCSC Undergraduate Researcher due March 20th

The People of Color Sustainability Collective is hiring and undergrad researcher! The student intern will assist with the analysis and dissemination of the longitudinal research of PoCSC, gaining in experience in survey data and qualitative analysis.  They work closely with faculty and graduate student mentors and will have the opportunity to pursue their own investigative effort. The Middlebrook Center is a non-profit organization in downtown San Jose that focuses on sustainable food production and urban ecosystem restoration. We use native plants and Regenerative Organic Agriculture to create healthy, productive, and efficient agro-ecosystems. Homeless Garden Training and Education Supervisor Until Filled
The Homeless Garden Project (HGP) is a nonprofit corporation based in Santa Cruz, CA that provides job training and transitional employment to people experiencing homelessness. In addition, HGP operates a vibrant community volunteer and education program. The training, employment, education and volunteer programs take place on an organic farm and in associated enterprises.  The Training and Education Supervisor will play an important role in modeling, practicing and reinforcing work-readiness lessons to trainees. Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders: Due: December 16th 
All-expenses-paid 11-day immersive business leadership experience for students currently enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).The 2020 summer program will be held at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management, from May 17th – May 28th. Students are encouraged to apply from all fields of study, but must have an interest in developing their leadership and professional skills, and should have an interest in attending a graduate business program.

Research and Policy Internship: Due: 2 weeks before the beginning of Winter quarter 
Council member Drew Glover is looking for motivated college students who are interested in creating dynamic groups (3 or more) to address environmental policies important to both students and constituents. Each team member contributes using the skill in which they excel while gaining hands on experience in areas where they wish to improve. You and your team will conduct research, write and analyze reports, and craft presentations for City Council meetings. The ideal candidate is interested in a career in local government and/or obtaining a theoretical and practical understanding of local environmental policies. The goal is to create or change ordinances, passing legislation, gaining knowledge on policy creation, and increasing public awareness/education. Areas of focus can go beyond Environmental Policy. Relevant topics may integrate with: Housing, Public Safety, Waste Management, Budget Analysis, Transportation, and Water policy. Rural West Internship Program: Due January 11th,2020
The Internship Program is a one-year paid Internship designed to increase the staff diversity within the Affordable Housing and Community Development field, and assist in meeting the diverse needs of the communities served throughout the rural West, including its emerging areas. This includes recruiting, training and retaining ethnically diverse students who may not otherwise know about the field. We specifically target underrepresented People of Color, who come from low-income rural backgrounds and reflect rural West’s diverse cultural and linguistic demographics. We give high priority to students completing their junior year or entering their last academic year at four year universities so that upon graduating from college, they may be able to be employed in entry level professional positions in the field

This internship affiliated with College 9/10 seeks UCSC students who want the opportunity to work with youth, facilitate agroecological knowledge acquisition, promote locally grown, healthy food, and raise awareness of social and environmental justice issues. Interns will travel to Calabasas Elementary once or twice a week (transportation provided or gas money reimbursed) to undertake the after-school program, helping to design and implement environmental, garden-based curricula with children ranging from first graders to sixth graders. Interns will also assist with the upkeep of the Discovery Garden: weeding, planting, watering, pruning, etc. 

CASFS Internship: Due TBD
CASFS is offering a lower division production internship focused on field-scale harvesting and orchard care, as well as general market garden-scale cover cropping, bed tillage, composting, and propagation.  The internship will include a cohort of approximately 15 interns, working as a team. There is a possibility that interested students might be invited to continue interning in future quarters. We are most interested in students who can commit to two quarters of interning with us, during your time at UCSC, though the quarters interned do not need to be back-to-back. Each year, a number of paid student staff positions are available to graduates of our internship program.

Healthy Beverage Initiative Student Researcher - Job # 13603: Until position fills up
A new UC wide initiative is being implemented at UCSC that aims to increase access to tap water and promote water as a healthy alternative to sugar sweetened beverages. The implementation team is looking for students to assist with mapping the current beverage environment on campus, as well as collecting flow meter data throughout the project to inform marketing decisions. Experience with research, mapping, and data collection is preferred, and a passion for creating a healthier campus is a must! Paid part-time position to increase access and promote tap water.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife Job Openings: Until positions fills up

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks to fill several currently advertised and soon-to-be advertised positions within the newly established Nutria Eradication Program. Fish and Wildlife Technician (up to 9 positions): responsible for the detection and eradication of invasive nutria within the southern portion of the infestation. Work includes surveys, trapping, data collection, communicating with landowners to obtain entry permits, and answering routine questions from the public relative to Departmental nutria efforts. The primary geographical focus of these positions varies based on the office (Stockton or Los Banos) each vacancy is based in and is defined within each job ad.

Peer Advisory at UCSC ENVS Advising Office - deadline: November 4th
The Environmental Studies Undergraduate Department is looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented and compassionate individual to join our peer advising team! The peer advising program includes a quarter-long training program where the peer adviser will enroll in ENVS 83 and earn 5-units in course credit. After the initial training period, there will be opportunity for the peer adviser to continue and transition into a paid position starting spring quarter.
