The Sustainability Office hosted the annual popular student-led weekend long summit, People Planet Power 2024 (formally known as Inter-Org), from April 12-14, with an opening night at the Oakes Learning Center and the remainder of the weekend at the YMCA Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek.
This year’s theme was “Intentional Movement Building and Embodying Radical Rest.” The Sustainability and Environmental Justice Ambassadors (SEJA) team, one of the many student teams in the Sustainability Office, led the event coordination with support from their student peers.
On Friday, the opening of the summit, participants enjoyed dinner while hearing from Patty Krawec, author of Becoming Kin, An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future, on how to build and grow meaningful relationships for our social movements.
On Saturday participants had a full day. They attended various student-led workshops, including hikes, social justice loteria, hydroponic planting, and other interactive activities. Some participants went swimming in the rain and the activities concluded with our traditional open mic night. On Sunday the summit wrapped up with a keynote from Dr. Naya Jones, Assistant Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz and Core Faculty in the Global and Community Health Program, on the importance and practice of radical rest.
Once again, this unique transformational weekend-long annual event was a success. Nearly 100 participants shared space, knowledge, community, experiences, growth and made unforgettable transformational memories that will remain with them for years to come!
A big thanks to all who were able to attend and who helped bring another memorable year of fun and learning to fruition.
