Norris Center Student Award- applications due June 2nd by 4pm
Each academic quarter, the Norris Center funds a select number of undergraduate student projects. Any undergraduate conducting a project relating to natural history can apply for an award of up to $1,000. Click here to download the application. UCSC Campus Seed Funding-submission deadline July 31st, (info session June 2nd, 12:00-1:00 pm)
CITRIS and the Banatao Institute, UC Santa Cruz invites Principal Investigators on the Santa Cruz campus to apply for research support through our Campus Seed Funding program. Separate from the broader CITRIS Core Seed Funding initiative, which funds collaborative research between the four CITRIS campuses, the UC Santa Cruz Campus Seed Funding program focuses on strengthening interdisciplinary connections here on the Santa Cruz campus. Through the program we will fund early-stage research, which furthers the CITRIS and the Banatao Institute mission and has strong promise of securing external funding.

The Digital Undercommons: Documenting Abolitionist Pedagogies in Global Social Movements- apply by June 4th
Looking for three undergraduate students for Building Belonging paid fellowships ($1500 per student) to be mentored in research during Summer 2021. Total commitment is around 100 hours, with a flexible schedule and remote work. At least one student fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and one fluent in Spanish are needed. No previous research experience is required, but experience with activism is preferred. Students will carry out virtual interviews and participant observation with youth organizing movements, one in Central Java, Indonesia, and the other in Pajaro Valley, CA. In addition to data collection, students will meet with their faculty mentor regularly and join biweekly Abolitionist Pedagogies Research Group meetings. This project will form the pilot data collection for a multi-year grant proposal, so there may be opportunity to continue after the Summer.

Moonshot or Mundane? Tracing Investment Patterns in the Bay Area Agri-food Tech Sector- apply by June 11th
Supporting a project about Silicon Valley's interest in food and agriculture, the research will involve conducting web-based research to investigate patterns and quantify amounts of financial investment in agri-food tech firms. Students will conduct extensive review of company websites, glean financial investment information from large databases such as Crunchbase Pro, and systematically catalogue financial investment data on agri-food tech firms found in online industry news sites, such as Pitchbook News. I am looking for two students who are comfortable and resourceful with web-based research and pay solid attention to detail. Experience with database management and web-scraping tools would be a big plus. This research needs to take place as soon as possible, so I greatly prefer those with ample availability early in the summer.

SUA Student Organization Funding Advisory- applications close Tuesday, May 11th, 2021 at 11:59pm
The Student Union Assembly (SUA) is now accepting applications for SOFA (Student Organization Funding Advisory), SUA’s largest funding body for student organizations. The SOFA Committee serves as the SUA's body for assessing funding requests from Student Organizations (SOs) on our campus. 
A student representative from your student organization must be available to provide a brief presentation for the funding request to the SOFA Committee on Thursday, May 13, 2021.   • Open to all UCSC startup teams
  • Open to all departments, research areas, and degree programs
  • Open to all business and social/environmental business models

Niebanck Founder's Prize- deadline May 15th
Paul Niebanck was the Founding Provost of College Eight (now Rachel Carson College) in 1972-73. In his honor, a group of friends and alumni have created an endowment to fund an annual $2,500 prize to a UCSC student whose work contributes original and innovative insight into the idea and practices of environmental analysis and planning in the urban and built environment, broadly defined. All UCSC undergraduate students, of any college or major, are eligible. 
To be eligible for the prize, a student’s work must be intentional, substantial, and exceptional. It may take the form of a senior thesis, internship, field project, community service, independent research, or any other individual or small group work that is appropriately supervised and credited. The content may range from practical to theoretical. It may be an artistic endeavor. It may be a critique or proposal. It may be a scientific exploration. It may call on a student’s ingenuity or it may entail physical labor. It may be something strongly conventional or it may be something quite daring and original. Any and all approaches are welcome.

Gabriel Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship- applications due by 5pm on Thursday, April 15th
The Gabriel Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to support undergraduate students in the Division of Social Sciences who are passionate about social issues and committed to public service. This endowment will be awarded to one or more outstanding undergraduate students majoring in any of the departments within the Division of Social Sciences. College Nine and Ten Student Project Funds-applications due April 16
Student Project Funds are available for projects during remote instruction. We are still looking for projects that benefit our colleges or campus community, so please consider how you can disseminate your project remotely. Both individual and collective efforts are encouraged.  Assistance will be considered in the following areas:
  1.  Academic research.
  2. Creative initiatives.
  3. Artistic endeavors.
  4. Public events of benefit to one or more colleges or to the campus community.  

Funding for individual projects can be matching, partial, or full, depending on merit, funds available, and other funding sources.

The Hammett Fellowship-applications due by Thursday, April 29th, 5pm
The Environmental Studies Department at UCSC is pleased to offer 4 graduate student research fellowships (GSRs) of $7500 each for summer 2021 to students who conduct interdisciplinary research on climate change or climate change and water issues. These funds are made possible by a generous donation from Benjamin and Ruth Hammett.
Awards are available to graduate students in any department at UCSC. Priority will be given to students who: (1) are working with UCSC faculty in two different disciplines (ideally labs that have not collaborated extensively in the past), (2) whose projects show promise to provide pilot data to help secure additional outside funding, and (3) whose results have clear applications to environmental problem solving. Winter 2021 Issue

Dean’s and Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards-applications due March 24th
The Deans and Chancellor of UC Santa Cruz wish to recognize excellence in research and creativity among undergraduate students as evidenced through projects and theses performed in the normal pattern of academic activity at UCSC.
Dean's Awards are granted to fifty of the most excellent undergraduate research theses or projects (ten from each academic division) completed at UCSC during the academic year. Each Dean's award project will receive $100 for outstanding achievement in their division. Winners of the Dean's awards will be announced before the end of April 2021. 
Fifteen Chancellor’s Awards are granted to the most outstanding top three theses or projects from each division's Deans' Awardees. Each Chancellor's Award project will receive an additional $500. Winners of the Chancellor's awards will be announced by the beginning of May 2021. 

RAY Diversity Fellowship-applications due March 26th
The RAY Fellowship Program aims to increase and facilitate conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy-related career pathways for emerging leaders of color. The RAY Fellowship Program is a two-year paid fellowship designed to equip recent college graduates with the tools, experiences, support, and community they need to become leaders in the conservation and clean energy sectors—one that, in our visions of the future, fully represents, includes, and is led by the diverse communities, perspectives, and experiences of the United States.  

UC3 Climate & Environmental Justice Graduate Student Fellowship- applications due by 8 AM on April 5th
Seeking a UC graduate student with research experience in environmental justice who can commit through November 2021 to work with the Climate & Environmental Justice Subcommittee of the UC Systemwide Climate Change Working Group (CCWG). Work will include developing policy language that integrates environmental justice and social equity into the Climate Protection Section of the Systemwide Sustainable Practices Policy. This fellowship will be part of the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) Fellows Program and tied to the cohort of graduate student fellows working on the climate justice pilot project. The student will get to collaborate with climate justice graduate student fellows at other participating UC3 institutions like the University of British Columbia.

Climate & Environmental Justice Undergraduate Student Fellowship-applications due by 8 AM on April 5th
Seeking a UC undergraduate student with interest in and experience with environmental

Climate Action Photo Contest-applications due by April 8th
The goal of this contest is to highlight the positive actions that people in our community are already taking to fight the problem of local and global climate change.  SCCAN wants to lift up those individuals and share their stories.

  • Submit a photo of a recent climate action within Santa Cruz County
  • (3) Youth Action Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to the top entries from people 21 and under!
  • (5) $100 prizes in Downtown Dollars will be awarded to top entries from all ages!
  • The photo does NOT need to be a professional photo – all skill levels are welcome
  • Winners announced on Earth Day (4/22/2021)!

 

Reyna Grande Scholarship - Deadline: Feb 15
Greetings students of the arts at Kresge College (majors, minors, and others welcome to apply!)
As Provost at Kresge College, I'm delighted to announce the third annual Reyna Grande Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to an enrolled student at Kresge College who proposes a creative project—involving arts, writing, or other creative media work—intended to advance the standing and visibility of Latino/a culture and history. The scholarship recipient’s proposed work might promote positive outcomes for communities identifying as Latin American or Chicana/o American, or challenge established narratives about, or otherwise strengthen dialogue about or around Latina/o/x identity. 2021 Keeling Curve Prize- application due by February 10
The Keeling Curve Prize awards $25,000 each to 10 climate projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or promote carbon uptake. Categories are transport and mobility; energy, social and cultural pathways; finance; and capture and utilization.

Council for a Sustainable Campus (CSC)- applications due February 16th by 5:00pm  

The Campus Sustainability Council shall only fund a group of students registered under SOAR, Student Media, OPERS, a college, or a department. Additional groups may be funded on a case-by-case basis at the present council’s discretion. The CSC shall define a registered student organization as a group of students that meet the following:

  • A clear internal structure of meeting times and locations, student positions, and responsibilities for the organization's membership regarding campus fiscal procedures,
  • Regular meetings sufficient to facilitate informed member participation in decisions,
  • A UCSC unit that agrees to serve as the sponsor and administrator of the organization's funds that understands and is accountable to the responsibilities of the position,
  • An updated document on file with the sponsoring unit that describes clear goals and objectives for the organization, its membership, decision-making processes, amendments, and the election/selection procedures of authorized representatives,
  • Students must remain the primary source of innovation, direction, and implementation of all projects.
  • Relevancy to the Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus

December 2020 Issue

DRC Logo Contest- due by January 9, 2021
The DRC is hosting a Logo Contest to further build our community and cultural identity, and want their new logo to come from fellow DRC students! Submit your design by January 9th to be considered for a $75 Amazon gift card prize

Book Manuscript Accelerator-application due by January 31, 2021
Awardees will be allocated a budget of approximately $5,000 to host 3-4 senior scholars on campus (or remotely during COVID restrictions) for a full day discussion of their manuscript. The expectation will be that at least one senior UCSC scholar from the awardee’s department or field serve as moderator of the workshop. The remaining 2-3 slots can be filled with anyone the awardee deems best positioned to comment on the work, with a view towards inviting scholars who may be able to serve as external letter writers during the tenure or promotion review process. It is expected that the UCSC moderator support the awardee in selecting invited scholars. Approximately 1-2 graduate students in the author’s field of study could also be invited to attend the workshop. The workshop should also include the Faculty Director of the Institute for Social Transformation and/or one of the members of the Executive Board.  All participants are expected to read the full monograph in advance and come prepared to engage in thoughtful and constructive critique of the manuscript.

Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program-application due by February 1, 2021, 11:59pm PST
Our goal is to serve students from groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, across disciplines, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife, and water.   
Each March we select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program focused on the summers between academic years.  Each summer Scholars receive a $4,400 stipend and funding to cover travel, room, and board. 

IDENTIZINE- due by February 22, 2021, 11:59pm PST
We welcome you to participate in the official collaborative zine of Colleges 9&10. We encourage you to submit creative art (photography, poetry, short stories, etc.) that has personal meaning to you. We will have a digital PDF of the zine ready by Spring Quarter 2021.

November 2020 Issue

Griswold Fellows Program - due November 5 by 4pm
This award of up to $3000* is being offered due support from the Olga T. Griswold Chair Funds. The award is for registered UCSC undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies who are currently doing or planning to do a senior internship or thesis that informs and promotes land conservation and/or restoration in California. Students must be working with both a faculty sponsor and an agency sponsor to ensure that the results are linked to actual conservation and restoration efforts.

Norris Center Natural History Project Awards - due November 5 by 4pm
Each academic quarter, the Norris Center funds a select number of undergraduate student projects. Any undergraduate conducting a project relating to natural history can apply for an award of up to $1,000. Available to undergraduate students of any major doing natural history projects, including education and art. 

Carbon Fund Grant - due November 16
The Carbon Fund is a student-fee funded initiative to reduce campus carbon emissions through various on-campus projects. This year, the Carbon Fund has approximately $150,000 in available grant money to advance energy reducing projects.

Division of Student Affairs and Success Funding
The Division of Student Affairs and Success has a student funding request process to support a variety of activities and development for registered student orgs. The Division of Student Affairs and Success understand that during these uncertain times, student organizations may be finding it difficult to secure co-sponsorships or events, they may be seeking funding for creative solutions for programming and professional development.
Funding requests must be made no less than 3 weeks in advance of when funding is needed. Click here for the request form.

DOE Scholarship Program
The DOE Scholars Program introduces students and recent college graduates to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) mission and operations. DOE Scholarship recipients will earn a stipend starting at $600 per week for undergraduates and $650 per week for graduate students and postgraduates during the internship period, be exposed to and participate in projects and activities in DOE mission-relevant research areas, develop professional networks with leading scientists and subject matter experts, and more! The application deadline is January 4, 2021, at 11:59:00 PM Eastern Time Zone.

NCSAM Binge-watching
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) and as we continue to work and learn remotely, cybersecurity is more important than ever. The videos included in this activity provide you with quick and easy tips to better protect university data and IT resources. Fill out the NCSAM binge-watching form with correct answers to be entered into a prize drawing to win 1 of 5 $50 Netflix e-gift cards, so the binge doesn’t have to end. To be eligible, you must be a UCSC student, staff, or faculty member and must complete this activity between October 1 - November 6, 2020.

Big Ideas Contest
Big Ideas is an early-stage social innovation competition that provides funding (up to 20K!), skill-development resources, networks, recognition and validation for interdisciplinary teams of graduate and undergraduate students who have creative solutions to pressing social challenges.

We want to know about your superpowers! Submit your original photograph or short story showing us how you help conserve the ocean for a chance to be featured on our website and social media during World Oceans Day.

Social Science Research Council: New Interdisciplinary Projects in the Social Sciences - due June 30
The Social Science Research Council’s (SSRC) Scholarly Borderlands initiative invites proposals for interdisciplinary working groups that ask novel questions, develop new frameworks, rethink methodological approaches, and find innovative answers.This call will fund up to three two-year working groups between 2020 and 2022. A maximum award of $50,000 will be provided to each working group toward direct costs associated with project-related meetings and similar activities, such as travel, accommodations, meals, or research assistance. Applications can be found here and are due by June 30, 2020. Proposals for interdisciplinary research projects advancing understanding of the human, social, political, and ethical dimensions of Covid-19 are encouraged.

Funding News: Career Center Supports Students in Uncertain Times

Spring Sustainability Grant
Registered student orgs may be eligible for a CSC sustainability grant if they have:
  1. A project that pertains to the Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus
  2. A staff fiscal advisor
  3. At least four members
Students interested in applying for a CSC sustainability grant are required to view a grant training video that will be posted to our website no later than May 1st. Applicants are encouraged to view this video as soon as possible, as it will contain deadlines and other essential information for applying.

The CONCOUR, Inc Scholarship Award in Environmental Studies due date TBA
Local business CONCUR, Inc. was founded in 1987 by environmental studies alumni John K. Gamman and Scott T. McCreary. CONCUR, Inc. specializes in combining environmental policy analysis with facilitation and mediation skills, to resolve complex disputes involving scarce or limited natural resources. This award is for $500 and it will be given to 1 undergraduate student and 1 graduate student.

The David Gaines Award in Environmental Studies due date TBA
David was a UCSC graduate who started the Mono Lake Committee in 1978.  The award is intended to cover expenses incurred for field projects that will make a significant contribution to the field of environmental studies by adding to our knowledge of a specific problem or by strengthening protection of the environment. Keeley Coastal Scholars Award Application due May 14
The Keeley Coastal Scholars program will support students from California with unmet financial aid needs doing summer research or policy work connected to coastal sustainability.  Scholarships will range from $1,000 to $4,000 per student with an associated $1,000 in support of the sponsoring faculty member.

LogJam! April 25 - 26th, 7 am - 5 pm
Pleasure Point County Park, E Cliff Drive and 33rd Avenue, Santa Cruz
Logjam! is an “Old Boards, No Cords” retro surfboard contest that features pre-1970 vintage surfboards, weighing 20 lbs or more, single fins, that are surfed without the use of a leash. With an Aloha spirit, this event recreates the early years of California surfing before technology evolved boards and surfing to the current day. Categories include men, women, children, tandem, and paddleboard races in a two day event that gives all a chance to surf the designated World Surfing Reserve, Pleasure Point area of Santa Cruz. Enjoy panoramic views of World-class Surfing at beautiful Pleasure Point Park.

March 2020 Issue

Rick Hooper Scholarship due March 5th at 12:00 pm (deadline extended)
The Rick Hooper Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Richard M. "Rick" Hooper, who died at age 40 in the August 19, 2003 terrorist bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.
Administered through the Division of Social Sciences, the Rick Hooper Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference will be given to undergraduate students in any UC Santa Cruz department who have a demonstrated interest in or are pursuing studies in one or more of the areas in which Rick Hooper focused his life's work. The award is intended to fund travel expenses for the selected undergraduate student or students for any of the following purposes: increasing understanding of the Arabic language or the Arabic-speaking or Muslim world, study at a college or university in an Arabic-speaking or Muslim majority country, an internship in peace and conflict resolution or human rights, study or work in Palestinian human rights issues.  Candidates must be UCSC undergraduate students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. To apply, please submit a 500-word proposal and a copy of your unofficial academic transcript via e-mail to pamdewey@ucsc.edu. The proposal must concisely explain your experience, preparation, and concrete goals related to the topics above.  
 
The Richard A. Cooley - Friends Foundation International Award due March 5th at 12:00 pm (deadline extended)
This award of $2000 is given to honor Richard Cooley, who was instrumental in the founding of the Environmental Studies program at UCSC. The Terence Freitas Award in Environmental Studies due March 5th at 12:00 pm (deadline extended)
Terence Freitas, a biology and environmental studies major, dedicated himself to facilitating the vision of native groups working to build a sustainable future in harmony with their own values and cultures. In February 1999, while working with the U'wa, a Colombian indigenous group, to establish a culturally appropriate school, Terry and two other Americans were kidnapped and killed. This award was established in his honor. This quarter, the award is for one student up to $1500. Limited to undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies.  Applicants must qualify for financial aid. Preference will be given to students with an interest in and commitment to the livelihood and culture of indigenous peoples in developing countries, or to those whose studies are related to conservation or rainforest preservation. Graduate Student Hammett Fellowship due March 5th at 12:00 pm (deadline extended)
The Environmental Studies Department at UCSC is pleased to offer two 1-quarter graduate student research fellowship GSRs for spring, summer, or fall 2020 to students who conduct interdisciplinary research on climate change or climate change and water issues. These funds are made possible by a generous donation from Benjamin and Ruth Hammett. Awards are available to graduate students in any department at UCSC. Priority will be given to students who: (1) are working with UCSC faculty in two different disciplines (ideally labs that have not collaborated extensively in the past), (2) whose projects show promise to provide pilot data to help secure additional outside funding, and (3) whose results have clear applications to environmental problem solving. The Gliessman Research Fellowship due March 26th at 5:00 pm
The Gliessman Research Fellowship in Water Resources and Food System Sustainability supports summer research by graduate and undergraduate students in the UC Santa Cruz Department of Environmental Studies. The focus of the fellowship is on student research that integrates aspects of food and water sustainability. The awards for the summer stipend will provide $8,200 per student.

Carbon Fund Grant due April 3rd at 11:59 pm
Do you have an idea for a project that will reduce carbon emissions?  In accordance with the California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32), the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) has demonstrated its commitment to mitigating the adverse impacts posed by climate change. Funded by student fees, the UCSC Carbon Fund offers a grant opportunity to UCSC affiliates for the implementation of projects that reduce local carbon emissions.
 
This application is due April 3rd, at 11:59pm. If your project is a micro project (requesting less that $5000), and we will let you know by mid April if your project has received funds. If your project is a macro project (requesting more than $5000), we will let you know by late April if your project has received funds.
 
The Carbon Fund Committee will use the following criteria as a primary tool to assist in the decision making process. However, the committee holds additional discretion related to  other outstanding factors, depending on the variety, type, focus, and number of total project applications submitted within a given funding year.

Rick Hooper Scholarship due February 21st
The Rick Hooper Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Richard M. "Rick" Hooper, who died at age 40 in the August 19, 2003 terrorist bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.
Administered through the Division of Social Sciences, the Rick Hooper Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference will be given to undergraduate students in any UC Santa Cruz department who have a demonstrated interest in or are pursuing studies in one or more of the areas in which Rick Hooper focused his life's work. The award is intended to fund travel expenses for the selected undergraduate student or students for any of the following purposes: increasing understanding of the Arabic language or the Arabic-speaking or Muslim world, study at a college or university in an Arabic-speaking or Muslim majority country, an internship in peace and conflict resolution or human rights, study or work in Palestinian human rights issues.  Candidates must be UCSC undergraduate students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. The proposal must concisely explain your experience, preparation, and concrete goals related to the topics above. 

Keeley Coastal Scholarship ($1000-$4000) due February 21st
The Keeley Coastal Scholars program supports undergraduate students from UC Santa Cruz with unmet financial aid need doing summer research or policy work connected to coastal sustainability. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $4,000 per student with an associated $1,000 in support of the sponsoring faculty member.

Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program: Due December 6th, at 11:59pm
NOAA’s Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for master’s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology—this can include, but is not limited to, ocean and/or coastal: engineering, social science, marine education, marine stewardship, and resource management disciplines—and particularly encourages women and members of minority groups to apply. Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships may provide, subject to appropriations, yearly support of up to $42,000 per student (a 12-month stipend of $30,000 in addition to an education allowance of up to $12,000), and up to $10,000 of support for a 4-6 week program collaboration at a NOAA facility. ABPA Harrington-Arthur Memorial Scholarship Essay Competition: Due January 31st, 2020 at 11:59pm
The ABPA Harrington-Arthur Memorial Scholarship Essay Competition was established to reward students that seek to increase their knowledge and understanding of how Cross-Connection Control and Backflow Prevention help ensure safe drinking water. Backflow Prevention is designed to prevent dangerous - and sometimes fatal - bacteria, chemicals, and other harmful agents from entering the local water supply systems. Backflow Prevention programs are essential to ensure that the water that reaches your home, school or place of business is as safe and pure as it was when it left the water treatment plant. The NOAA Office of Education 2020 undergraduate: Due January 31st, 2020 at 11:59pm
The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship provides funds for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA's mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Since 2001, over 186 students have completed the program and over 75% go on to graduate school. Students attending Minority Serving Institutions as defined by the US Department of Education (Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Alaskan-Native Serving Institutions, and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions) are eligible to apply for the program.

Students pursuing degrees in environmental protection, forestry, wildlife and fisheries biology, parks and recreation, park management, environmental law and public policy, environmental art, and California history are encouraged to apply. Dedication ideals of the scholarship will be considered at least as important as financial need in making the award.

The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award in Meteorology: Due: June 5th, 2020 at 11:59pm
The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award was established by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world renowned authority of seismology, who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, until his death in 1956.  The recipient of the Father James B. Macelwane award will receive a stipend of $1000 supported by member donations to the AMS Giving Program.

Mpower Global Citizen Scholarship: Due: November 15th at 11:59pm
Be accepted at, or enrolled in, a full-time degree program at a U.S. or Canadian school that MPOWER supports (Santa Cruz checks out) For study in the U.S., applicant is either a U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, or has a valid visa that permits study in the U.S.  

Big Ideas Award: Due: November 20th at 11:59pm
One of the nation's oldest and most prestigious social impact contests is accepting pre-proposal for this years competition. Pre-proposals are due by November 15, 2017.On April 30, 2020, the Big Ideas community will gather for its annual Grand Prize Pitch & Awards Celebration to recognize the most outstanding innovations in the 2019-2020 contest. A select group of finalist teams (6-8) will be invited to participate in the Grand Prize Pitch event for the opportunity to win up to an additional $10,000 for their project. Following the pitches, there will be a poster and demo session featuring all of the projects and innovators from the 2019-2020 Big Ideas Contest.

The Richard A. Cooley Memorial Award: Due: November 21st at 12:00pm (noon)
This award of $2000 is given to one student to honor Richard Cooley, who was instrumental in the founding of the Environmental Studies program at UCSC. Dr. Cooley came to UC Santa Cruz in 1970. A strong advocate of field studies, he initiated the Alaska Field Studies Program at the same time. He wrote numerous books and articles on natural resource conservation, public policy, and environmental studies. 

The CONCUR, Inc. Scholarship: Due: November 21st at 12:00pm (noon)
Local business CONCUR, Inc. was founded in 1987 by environmental studies alumni John K. Gamman and Scott T. McCreary. CONCUR, Inc. specializes in combining environmental policy analysis with facilitation and mediation skills, to resolve complex disputes involving scarce or limited natural resources. This award is for $500 and it will be given to 1 undergraduate student and 1 graduate student.

Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders NOW: Due: November 30th at 11:59pm 
Since 1982, USHLI has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships and internships to students from disenfranchised groups. Most notably, the Dr. Juan Andrade, Jr. Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders seeks to recognize Hispanics students who share Dr. Andrade’s lifelong commitment to servant leadership. Recipients will receive two non-renewable scholarships: Conference scholarship to attend the 38th USHLI National Conference. An academic scholarship ($1,000 for a 4-year institution or $500 for a 2-year institution) for undergraduate students.

UCSC Carbon Fund Money: Due: November 4th
The Carbon Fund is a student-fee funded measure that annually awards grant money to projects that directly reduce the campus carbon footprint. Each year, we award about $100,000 to a wide range of projects, from solar recharging stations, to lab equipment upgrades. Even if you are not interested, we'd like to ask you to forward the link to anyone in your networks that may be involved in sustainable projects. 

UCSC Campus Sustainability Plan Fellowship Program: Due: November 4th
Serves as an undergraduate student employment funding mechanism to support departments in their implementation of projects and programs that forward the Goals, Strategies, and Actions identified in the 2017-22 Campus Sustainability Plan. The CSP Fellows program provides award funding for departments to hire an undergraduate student. Fellowship awards are for up to 10 hours/week at minimum wage for late Fall through Spring quarters, plus $500 for project implementation. Unit projects will be funded based on how well they align with the implementation of specific Campus Sustainability Plan actions. If funded, responsibility for recruitment, hiring and supervision of the Fellow rests on the unit hosting the project. Quarterly training opportunities will be offered for supervisors and mentors from all units by the Sustainability Office.
