Student Sustainability Advisors

Who are we?

Student Sustainability Advisors (SSAs) are peer-to-peer educators who serve UC Santa Cruz's residential housing areas. These 8 student leaders provide programming and educational opportunities within UC Santa Cruz’s residential communities around sustainability topics, share events and information with the residents of their communities about sustainability and environmental behavior, and serve as sustainability liaisons within CHES (Colleges, Housing, & Educational Services).  SSAs also implement annual projects on campus that forward campus sustainability goals, strategies, and one-year actions as guided by the 2017-2022 Campus Sustainability Plan.

Academic Year 2019-20 theme is Zero Waste!

SSAs’ work in AY2019-20 is ZERO WASTE THEMED to help address the recycling contamination crisis in residence halls. SSAs have been and will continue to host programs like public waste audits, recycling & waste reduction tabling/education, clothing swaps, and sister college clean-ups! 

The SSAs are also sponsoring quarterly Sustainability Mixers for RAs/NAs interested in learning more about sustainability, getting updates, and brainstorming solutions to recycling contamination in their communities. 

Annual Projects include: 

  • Researching and creating a UC Santa Cruz specific waste sorting platform to reduce user confusion in sorting;
  • Maintaining and increasing engagement with our Zero Waste social media pages;
  • Creating and executing creative waste reduction education for residential students;
  • Piloting, gathering data on, and creating a model for durables in College Programs and Housing offices to reduce bioware use and associated contamination.
